I am a HUGE Julie Andrews fan and I grew up on the Sound of Music-- so when I heard that we could travel to Salzburg and take a tour to see all the places from the movie, I jumped at the opportunity!
On our trip from Saas Fe, we had the most interesting co-passenger in our train car. Our new German friend brought with her 5 mini bottles of champagne and a lot of laughs. Although she didn't speak much English-- she did manage to convey her feelings about George Bush. You can imagine what my dad thought about that.
Upon our arrival in Salzburg, we found a quaint little Austrian restaurant around the corner and had a fantastic wienerschnitzel. We also had this dessert that consisted of pancake pieces mixed with apples and caramel sauce... it was fantastic!
Having surrendered their man cards for the day, Dad and Will joined the girls for our sing-a-long tour. From our pictures, you can tell that the girls were definitely the most excited about visiting Maria's old stomping grounds!
We sang along with the soundtrack as our tour guide took us to all the famous places in the movie. Will even gave an impressive rendition of Edelweiss when they asked for the men to help out with the singing. There were only 5 or 6 men in the entire tour group!
We stopped at the little lake village where they filmed the church scene to have more apple strudel and take pictures climbing the trees. "Just some local urchins."

Because of our tight schedule, we had to miss the portion of the tour where you see the Mirabell Gardens. Oh well, I guess we will have to go back and see them another time!
When I got back to the states, I watched the Sound of Music and I must say I had a different appreciation for it after learning all the behind the scenes stuff. Did you know that the real Maria is in one scene of the movie? Watch for her when Julie Andrews leaves the Abbey to head to the Captain's house...
Next stop- a short stop in Paris and Normandy beach!
