USA...USA...USA!!!

I am a HUGE fan of the winter Olympic games. I think it has something to do with watching figure skating with my mom when I was a kid. There's something so romantic about the way they float on the ice and make it look so easy. I remember watching Lillehammer in '94 and thinking that I should try out to be a figure skater... at this point, I'd never had a pair of skates on. I was a shoe in, don't you think?!

There's something really special about watching the games and rooting for your home country. I've found myself rooting for Canada as well. I was so excited when they won their first home gold medal last night! It's a shame that they've had 3 Olympics and had yet to win a gold. The story of Alex Bilodeau is really inspiring- his brother has cerebral palsy and was cheering him on to win the gold!

Even though I really like skiing, speed skating and the luge... my all time favorite is figure skating. I love singles, pairs, ice dancing- the whole thing! We were talking tonight about Olympics and I remembered the skate that sealed the deal for me. After Oksana Baiul won the gold in Lillehammer, she and Viktor Petrenko, her mentor and benefactor, skated in the championship freestyle skate... There's something about that fun routine that really hooked me!

Last night, I was really impressed with the pairs. I don't normally root for the Chinese, but I did want Shen and Zhao to win the gold after 18 years skating together! Tonight is the men's short program and I am hoping Evan Lysacek will do really well!

Other Olympians I'm really rooting for.... Lindsey Jacobellis in snowboarding and Lindsey Vonn in the downhill events. I must also admit that I have a small crush on Apolo Ohno- I was a huge fan of his on DWTS and though he needs to shave, I want him to win the gold!

GO TEAM USA!!!

  1. Sutton and I love the winter olympics, too! This is our third olympics since we have been together...When we were dating long distance, we would watch them and talk to each other on the phone:). Also, back when we were showing steers, my sisters and I would name our steers after the olympians...You probably don't remember back this far, but we had steers named Tomba, Eddie the Eagle, and Moe. Great post...I love reading your commentary!
